The scaffold user course gives you the training you need to use scaffolding safely. The course is for those who will work from scaffolding – not erect, dismantle or alter it – and meets the training requirement for scaffold users in section 17-5 of the Regulations concerning the performance of work.

You learn what to check before stepping onto a scaffold, how to use it correctly, and what to do if you discover faults or defects.

Who is the course for?

The course is for tradespeople and other workers in construction, civil works, façades, painting, roofing, electrical, plumbing and maintenance who will carry out work from scaffolding or mobile access towers.

What you will learn

  • Regulations, requirements and responsibilities when using scaffolding

  • Types of scaffolding and the main parts of a scaffold

  • Pre-use checks – scaffold tag/signage, decking, guardrails and access

  • Load classes and what the scaffold can withstand

  • Fall hazards and protection against falling people and objects

  • Use of mobile access towers

  • Weather and wind, and when the scaffold must not be used

  • What you are not allowed to alter, and how to report defects

Requirements and regulations

Workers who will use scaffolding must be trained in its safe use (Regulations concerning the performance of work, section 17-5). The training must be documented. If you will also erect, dismantle or alter scaffolding, separate training is required – see the scaffolding course 2–9 metres.
